Words will never be able to convey the amount of pride, honor, excitement and anxiety I feel for this man on this day. At noon today, Barack Hussein Obama will be sworn in as this nation's 44th president.
After more than 200 years of institutionalized slavery, more than 100 years of Jim Crow laws that legalized segregation and the on-going discrimination that people of color endure regularly - finally, we have stepped up to cash that metaphoric check Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., spoke about at the March on Washington.
Standing tall atop the shoulders of great black Americans like King, like Ralph Abernathy, like Rosa Parks and countless others, we as people, of all colors, have achieved a dream that our foreparents dared not dream. We have joined together with brethren and foes alike to move our wonderful nation forward in a positive direction.
Today, America is different. It's been transformed, reborn and it has indeed become a better place.
There's still work to be done, but now, we can do it together. Now is the time for us to put aside our differences, our hatred and our insecurities so that we can all come together on one accord to make our country the best it can possibly be.
So today, faithful readers, shake a hand, share a smile, hell, hug a few folks and let's get to work.
A wise person once said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Casting our ballots for Obama was that first step and the work we do will up to those thousand miles. Let's finish this journey together.

Standing on the Cusp of History

It's been a while ...
... and I know I should have posted something and I have been working on a rather long post, but I saw something today that I couldn't wait to post.
It's quite obvious who my candidate is from these posts and you all know I get a kick out of the ignorance of some people and sometimes it pisses me off. Well, today, I got a kick out of it. Well, the situation anyway.
So, some kid in NYC has designed a plain t-shirt that reads, "OBAMA IS MY SLAVE" and he's selling them for $69 a pop. I'm amazed that racism tees are selling for so much, but hey, when ya got a cause, ya got a cause, right?
Anyway, some white chick bought the shirt and decided to wear it on the streets of New York and caught a beat down. Now, I'm not an advocate of violence for any reason, but uh, I have to say that she pretty much bought that one.
Apparently, the woman was approached by four teen aged girls who shoved her, pulled out her earphones, and spit in her face.

With all the recent news reports about racism in this election and just the knowledge of what the word "slave" in reference to a black person can and often does incite, I would hope that these t-shirts aren't selling that well and that some people have sense enough to know not to wear them in mixed crowds.
The designer of the shirt is an Israeli-born, Jewish man who has reportedly said that he "can't stand" Obama because he's a Muslim and he reminds him of Adolf Hitler. The guy is 25 years old, which means he wasn't even thought of during Hitler's reign so how can Obama remind him of Hitler? I'm not even going to address the "Muslim" comment.
If that shirt weren't bad enough, the others read: "Jews Against Obama,” “Obama = Hitler” and “Who Killed Obama?”
As I said before, I don't advocate violence of any kind, but maybe she isn't the one who needs a beatdown. I am all for free speech and I rather enjoy my First Ammendment rights but I think this is an abuse of that. I don't see anybody designing any "JOHN MCCAIN IS MY DISCIPLE" t-shirts. I haven't seen any t-shirts asking who's killed him.
Oh well, I guess it's time that we, Obama supporters and people of color, gird our loins, it's only going to get worse. I'm sure racists of all kinds will be coming out of the woods, boardrooms and out of retirement to deter us all from voting for Obama in November.

I tell you ...
... if this were a movie, I'd be sitting on a porch in a rocking chair with a glass of lemonade humming an old Negro spirituals and telling my grandchildren about where I was on the day Barack Obama made history.
I don't know about you guys but I am so proud of this man and his family it makes no sense. I just hope that they are who they say they are and we don't find out some horrible incriminating story about them later on. I just think that it'd be too much for (his supporters) to handle.
But anyway, so that I don't ruin the mood I have today, I just want to call attention to the way pop culture has become mainstream, even in politics. Did ya'll catch the way his wife gave him some dap right before he gave his speech last night?
I almost fell off my couch laughing when I saw this.
First off, the first person I ever saw do that bump on TV was Howie Mandel and 
that's because he has OCD and shaking hands gives him the 'heebie jeebies.'
For the record, OCD is obsessive compulsive disorder. There are different degrees of it. The way I understand it is folks with OCD like everything done a certain way. Everything must be that way at all times or they spaz out.
I've always said those people have a tick. Apparently, his tick is excessively washing hands and being in the business of show business, he's constantly meeting people and he had to do something to not seem rude, so, he gives people dap.
The only other guy I've ever seen on TV who gives dap is Stephen Colbert (pronounced Cole-bear). Stephen Colbert is THE MAN,OK!
That is one of the funniest dudes on TV right now. If you never watch the Colbert Report on Comedy Central, I challenge you to do so. If you're here, that means you are sort of a political junky and I know you'd find his brand of humor as hilarious as I do.
He's even renamed it the "Colbert Bump" and he gives one to people every time they come on the show. He even gave one to both Barack and Michelle Obama in separate appearances on the show. That is what made the whole thing funny as crap to me.
Now that Obama is the nominee and John McCain makes it his business to run around trying to do what Obama does, I guess he'll find a way to give his wife some 'dap.' I can't wait to see how.
This question could be in vain, but I'm dying to know if you guys watched the results on CNN last night. Actually, I only want to know if you happened to catch the banter between Anderson Cooper and Donna Brazile.
I won't insult your intelligence and tell you who Anderson Cooper is, but you might need me to refresh your memory about Donna Brazile. I could sit here and type and tell you why she is the best political analyst on CNN, but I won't do that.
I'll just tell you that she's a Louisiana native and you can hear it in every word she says. She graduated from LSU and later became the first black woman to direct a major presidential campaign when she was the campaign manager for the Al Gore campaign in 2000. Now she's known for her commentary of this year's primary elections.
Anyway, all of this relates to pop culture because of an exchange between her and A.C. last night during an analysis of the elections and Obama's nomination.

Welcome!!!
It seems that I have officially entered into the political realm of this blog world. After so many of the post on my original blog, Difference of Opinion, morphed into political posts, I have opted to just do a blog dedicated strictly to politics and leave the other one for commentaries on news and pop culture.
With that said, I will let you know up front that I plan to vote Democratic in the pending presidential race and in the May 6 primary in the great state of North Carolina, I will vote for Sen. Barack Obama.
Personally, I don't see how he can do any worse than the current administration and I happen to admire the way he has carried on during this primary election season. While he was not my first choice, I will say that I believe he is the one who will get the things done that need to be done.
I will not make any empty promises that I will post on so and so-day or x amount of times per week. I will say that I will post whenever there are things being done that I just flat out don't agree with or feel like there is something that needs to be said.
Sit back, relax and enjoy this political roller coaster that will be the next eight months of our lives. So lace up your boots, it's about to get thick up and through here!
